Playground San Siro
Urban Regeneration | Landscape | Sport, Learning & Wellbeing
The project reimagines the former Trot Racecourse in San Siro as a new urban district centred on sport, education, wellbeing and collective life. Conceived as a continuous and accessible public landscape, the proposal transforms the former racecourse into a network of interconnected spaces where architecture, landscape and infrastructure work together as a single urban system.
A diverse programme of educational, recreational, cultural, health-related and residential functions is distributed across the site, creating a mixed-use environment that remains active throughout the day. Public plazas, planted courtyards, pedestrian routes, sports facilities and community spaces are connected through a continuous green structure, encouraging movement, interaction and shared use.
Rather than treating the site as a collection of isolated buildings, the project operates across multiple scales. Architectural volumes frame public spaces and establish distinct identities for different programmes, while landscape elements extend between them to create continuity throughout the district. Terraces, planted slopes, open courtyards and transitional spaces blur the boundary between built form and public realm.
Biophilic principles are integrated into the design through vegetation, shaded areas, permeable surfaces and a strong relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces. These elements contribute to environmental quality while supporting physical activity, social interaction and everyday wellbeing.
Through this multidisciplinary approach, Playground in San Siro proposes an adaptable urban ecosystem that responds to contemporary social and spatial needs while reconnecting the former racecourse with the surrounding neighbourhood.
